How a Boiler Thermostat Works?
A room thermostat is a switch that triggers your boiler based on the air temperature around it. When you set a target—let’s say 21°C—the thermostat monitors for any drop below that point. Traditional boiler thermostats rely on a bimetallic strip to sense these changes, while modern WiFi thermostats use electronic sensors.
When the room gets too cold, the thermostat sends a command to the boiler to ignite the burner and circulate hot water through your radiators. As soon as the room reaches the set temperature, the circuit opens, the signal stops, and the boiler shuts down to save energy.

Most modern gas, oil, combi, and electric boilers work well with low-voltage smart thermostats. But with older units, you might need a relay pack, an interface module, or a control board upgrade to communicate properly.
The biggest risks are voltage mismatches (24V vs. high-voltage), missing C-wires, or proprietary control systems that don't work well with others. Also, boilers over 15 years old usually don't support modern communication protocols.
Check your system voltage and look for a C-wire first. We always recommend labeling the existing wires and taking a photo before you disconnect. Always double-check the new wiring diagram.
If you mount it near direct sun, drafts, or heat sources, you’ll get false readings. This causes short-cycling and comfort issues.
This usually happens if the thermostat is set for too many cycles per hour when a unit isn't switched to steam or hydronic mode. Poor placement or incompatible logic can also cause it, so adjusting the cycle rate during setup is a important.
